Lime Stone Wash

Products needed:
AquaBond Off White
AquaGlaze
AquaColor – Ochre Yellow, Earth Brown, Off White, Chestnut Brown
Chip Brushes

Prepare the wall by cleaning and taping off area to be painted. Be sure to cover furniture and put drop cloths on the floor.

Coat surface with fresh rolled on coat of Aquabond Off White.

Prepare three separate containers with lids. In the first one mix three parts AquaGlaze to one part AquaColor Ochre Yellow and little amount of Earth Brown. Label this Gold. In the second, mix to equal amounts of Earth Brown, Chestnut Brown and Ochre Yellow, mix and then add 3parts AquaGlaze. Label this Praline. Then for the final color container, combine AquaColor Off White with little bit of Earth Brown. Label this one Antique. Label and keep separate.

Take three 3-3inch chip brushes and put one in each cup. Roll on a slip coat of AquaGlaze in about a four foot square area. Work in a two by two area, starting in a top corner of the room; be sure not to work all the way to the edge. Keep the finish within a picture frame shape of the glaze square. This is to keep a wet edge to blend the next area together without having a lap line. Strike on the Gold color in about four to six inch vertical strokes, staggered and sparingly in the 2 ft square.

Then aim for the negative areas with the praline color in a random approach with the same kind of vertical strokes. Then, apply in the same manner with the Antique mixture.  Use about 30 % less of the Antique color than the others. Then take a dry clean larger chip brush and stroke downward slightly expanding and intermixing the linear strokes. If the colors need more blending, take a clean chip brush and stroke over the area with a barely wet application of AquaGlaze. Then take a badger brush and final stroking in a vertical fashion to blend and stroke downward. This achieves the washed look of an aged limestone wall. Prepare the next area with a slip coat again of AquaGlaze and repeat.

Save the corners of the room until the next day and prepare in a linear way in the same method. This is prevent damaging the freshly painted area. If you find the color is too dark wipe downward right away with a t-shirt type cloth to remove and re-apply.

Let dry overnight before removing the tape. This is a beautiful subtle old world finish that serves as a lovely backdrop for vivid artwork.
